Working hard towards your GCSEs? What about what you’re going to do afterwards, during your summer holidays? Take on the Summer Challenge, and learn new skills, make new friends and support your local community

This summer Oxfordshire County Council is offering 105 young people across Oxfordshire the opportunity to experience a summer packed with exciting opportunities. The Summer Challenge will include trips, days out, chances to learn new skills and make new friends.

About the Summer Challenge

Summer Challenge is a National Citizen Service programme, a government initiative.

NCS aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing young people from different backgrounds together to make a difference in their communities.  It is a voluntary programme for 16 and 17-year-olds which focuses on their personal and social development which includes challenging activities, from away-from-home residential experiences to a self-designed social action project.

The Summer Challenge is open to 15-16 year olds in the summer after Year 11, and 16-17 year olds in the summer after Year 12. The programme is free, but spaces are limited. Will you be one of the lucky ones?

All the details

The Summer Challenge will open at the beginning of the summer holidays with activities and team building exercises. Look out for adventure, confidence and team-building sessions and a chance to meet other young people from across the county.

Later in the summer there will be a one-week residential out of Oxfordshire with lots of adventurous outdoor activities like coasteering, surfing, rock-climbing and gorge-walking, as well as the opportunity to relax and get to know other young people on the programme.

Back in Oxfordshire, the social action challenge will give you the opportunity to give something back to your local community whilst gaining and developing new skills such as arts, creative media, music, performance, events organisation and more..

At the end of the summer each team will have another trip away to create an end of programme presentation which will be shown at the joint graduation ceremony at the end of the programme.

And it doesn’t stop there; after the Summer Challenge you will be invited to take part in other activities, including an Opportunities and Activities Fair in October which will focus on your future.

Get ahead with the summer challenge

The Summer Challenge only runs for part of the summer, so you can still fit in a holiday, but it’s important to get registered soon and commit to the dates as spaces are limited, but there will be a waiting list for people keen to take part.

Hi My daughter who is 15 is a special needs student currently at Springfield School. This programme appears to be targeted towards those students who are more able bodied and minded. Are there any other programmes available that would suit an individual with special needs but aim to provide the same kind of social interaction. Thank you.

Hi Kathy - I'm going to pass your query on to those involved in running the summer challenge scheme as they are the ones who would know - witney Hub will be the nearest to you that is running the sceme and will be able to advise if it is possibel for her to take part or if there is anythinmg else available for your info their phone number is 01865 328730 eiwitney@oxfordshire.gov.uk

Kathy, Just to clarify NCS will be tailored towards the young people who are selected to participate. The programme is targeted towards all young people including those with special needs and your Daugter is very welcome to submit an Expression of Interest to take part in the full programme. I am planning to visit Springfield school tomorrow to invite as many Expressions of interest as I can.

Thanks for clarifying that Stephen - i thought that would be the case - Karin
