Young People take over Rose Hill on Takeover Day
On Friday November 11th, young people from Rose Hill Early Intervention Satellite Centre took part in OCC’s takeover day, and took over the running of the youth club for the evening.

Taking place on Remembrance Day, November 11th of this year, Takeover Day once again gave children and young people the chance to take on adult roles and responsibilities.
Takeover day is an event that takes place all over the nation each year and gives the children and young people across the UK inspiration, aspiration and helps them plan for the future in terms of work and careers. Children and young people get the opportunity to experience working and taking on adult roles in schools, hospitals, police stations, offices, charities and many more places.
A group of young people from Rose Hill Early Intervention Satellite Centre took part in Takeover Day. They wrote this report about their experiences:
Rose Hill Takeover Day
On Friday November 11th, young people from Rose Hill Satellite Centre took part in OCC’s takeover day. Aimee Barrett and Lloyd Barrett decided to step up and become assistant workers for the session.
Lloyd assisted our gym instructor organising the young people for their slots. Aimee took responsibility for the music studio bookings and helped organise activities in the social area.
The staff team briefed participants on Health and Safety, the plan for the session, setting up equipment and took part in the evaluation at the end.
They told us what they liked about their roles, and the difficulties they faced when doing the job.
The two young people did a brilliant job showing real leadership qualities, the ability to communicate clear instructions, to be assertive and distinguish the difference between a service user and youth worker.
The staff team also felt they had done an amazing job at reflecting on their roles during the debrief, their thoughts were:
“I feel I know what being a youth worker is like” AB
“There is more to the job than you think” AB
“It’s difficult policing the room and attempting to keep an eye on everything that’s going on. I would rather do one thing at a time” LB
“It’s hard when young people aren’t listening to you; I know how it must feel for the staff team now” LB
Jodie O’Shea, Michael Porter, Lloyd Barrett and Aimee Barrett
More about Takeover Day
Takeover day helps children and young people in a variety of ways, whether it’s by giving them a general idea on what sort of work that they may want to do, developing the skills they need and preparing them for the future, giving them some responsibility or just preparing them for the workplace, those who participate will surely find it a memorable and worthwhile experience.
